In a significant move to enhance cultural representation, Rashtrapati Bhavan, the President of India's iconic residence and office, has renamed two of its prominent halls. The press release, released on July 25, 2024, announced the renaming of 'Durbar Hall' to 'Ganatantra Mandap' and 'Ashok Hall' to 'Ashok Mandap.'
The decision, endorsed by President Droupadi Murmu, aligns with ongoing efforts to reflect Indian cultural values within the historic walls of Rashtrapati Bhavan. The renaming is part of a broader initiative to make more accessible and representative of the nation's heritage.
"Ganatantra Mandap" replaces 'Durbar Hall'
A venue traditionally used for national ceremonies and awards. The term 'Durbar,' historically associated with the courts of Indian rulers and British administration, was deemed less relevant post-India's transition to a Republic. 'Ganatantra,' meaning Republic, better reflects the democratic values of modern India, making 'Ganatantra Mandap' a more fitting name for this prestigious space.
"Ashok Mandap" replaces 'Ashok Hall'
It's originally a ballroom. The name 'Ashok,' deriving from the revered Emperor Ashok and the Ashok tree, symbolizes unity and peace. The new name, 'Ashok Mandap,' not only maintains the essence of its historical significance but also eliminates colonial influences, bringing consistency in nomenclature and emphasizing cultural unity.
