The Incident

The victim, a dedicated doctor who had aspired to serve society, was found brutally assaulted in the seminar hall of the state-run hospital. Initial autopsy reports revealed that she suffered major injuries, including bleeding from her eyes, mouth, and private parts, with additional marks of violence on her legs, neck, hands, and lips. The shocking brutality of the crime has left the medical community and the public in a state of shock.

The Accused

The accused, identified as Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer associated with the Kolkata Police, was arrested on Saturday following an intense investigation. Although not officially affiliated with RG Kar Medical College, Roy had frequent access to the hospital, which he allegedly exploited to commit the crime. Reports suggest that Roy, who has a history of violent behavior and marital issues, was intoxicated during the incident and attempted to destroy evidence by washing his clothes the following morning. However, bloodstains on his shoes provided crucial evidence leading to his arrest.

Public Outcry and Protests

The crime has sparked a wave of protests led by junior doctors, resident doctors, and medical students across West Bengal and other parts of India. In Kolkata, the protests entered their third day on Sunday, severely disrupting services in government hospitals. Demonstrators are demanding swift justice, a transparent investigation, and enhanced security measures for healthcare workers.

City Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal visited the hospital twice over the weekend, urging the public to refrain from spreading rumors and assuring that the investigation is being conducted with full transparency. However, dissatisfaction with the police's handling of the case has led to escalating demands from the medical community.

Nationwide Solidarity

The Federation of Resident Doctors' Association of India (FORDA) has extended its support to the ongoing protests, calling for a nationwide halt of elective medical services starting Monday. The association has urged the Union Health Ministry to intervene, emphasizing the need for stringent security protocols in hospitals to protect healthcare professionals from such barbaric crimes.

Government and Political Reactions

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has expressed deep condolences to the victim's family and vowed to seek the death penalty for the perpetrator. She also stated that the state government would welcome a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe if the family is dissatisfied with the ongoing investigation. Banerjee's statement comes amid mounting pressure from opposition parties, particularly the BJP, which has criticized the state government for failing to ensure the safety of women and healthcare workers.

Demands and Future Course of Action

In response to the tragedy, protesting doctors have issued a list of demands, including a fast-track judicial inquiry, exemplary punishment for the accused, resignation of key hospital authorities, and adequate compensation for the victim's family. They have also called for the resignation of the police officers responsible for security lapses and an official apology from the Kolkata Police for the alleged mishandling of the situation.

The protestors have announced an indefinite cease-work protest in all government-run hospitals in West Bengal, including emergency services, until their demands are met. A mass citizens’ rally is scheduled for Monday, with participants marching from College Square to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital to press their demands.
