"This could have a massive knock-on effect on the entire justice system, clogging up police cells and delaying the course of justice," Fairhurst warned.

Fairhurst noted that last week alone saw 397 new receptions into the prison system, with the adult male closed estate left with only 340 available spaces as of Friday. In response to the overcrowding crisis, Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced a temporary reduction in the proportion of sentences that inmates must serve before becoming eligible for parole—from 50% to 40%.
