Winder, Georgia (US) – A community is left reeling after a 14-year-old student, Colt Gray, allegedly opened fire at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, killing two students and two teachers, and injuring nine others. The suspect, whose troubled upbringing may have contributed to the tragic events, grew up in a household marked by neglect, violence, and turmoil, according to neighbors and police reports.

A Troubled Family History
Colt Gray, described by those who knew him as a quiet and withdrawn child, has been charged with four counts of school murder. His mother, Marcee Gray, has a long history of arrests for drug use and domestic violence, and his father, Colin Gray, is now facing charges of his own, including four counts of involuntary manslaughter and eight counts of cruelty to children for allegedly buying Colt the weapon used in the shooting.
Lauren Vickers, a former neighbor in Jefferson, Georgia, recalled the chaotic and neglectful environment that Colt and his siblings endured. “There were nights when the mom would lock him and his sister out of the house. They would be banging on the back door, screaming and crying”, she said. Vickers, who reported the family to child services multiple times, described Colt as "not a bully or a mean kid... he was so quiet".
Marcee Gray’s criminal record spans 17 years and four counties in Georgia, including charges of domestic violence, drug possession, property damage, and fraud. Her struggles with addiction led to multiple run-ins with the law, leaving her family to cope with the consequences. She reportedly left the family home earlier this year, and the children were left in the care of their father, who worked in construction.
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office had visited the Gray home in May 2023 following an FBI report that Colt had threatened to shoot up his middle school on Discord, a popular messaging app among gamers. The case was shelved due to a lack of evidence, but concerns about Colt’s access to firearms remained. Despite warnings from law enforcement, Colin Gray purchased an AR-15 rifle for Colt as a Christmas gift in December 2023. This same weapon was used in the school shooting.
The Day of the Shooting
On Wednesday, the morning of the shooting, a new security system, Centegix, alerted the Barrow County E911 center to an active shooter at Apalachee High School at around 10:22 a.m. The system, recently implemented in Barrow County schools, allows staff to press a panic button on their ID cards to alert law enforcement immediately.
Officers arrived within minutes and quickly apprehended Colt, who had surrendered after being confronted by a school resource officer. The shooter reportedly used an AR-style weapon during the attack, firing 10 to 15 rounds before being subdued. Students and staff were evacuated to the school’s football field, and the school was declared safe by 11:30 a.m.
The Aftermath
The victims of the tragic incident were identified as math teachers Richard Aspinwall, 39, and Christina Irimie, 53, along with 14-year-old students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo. Aspinwall, who was also an assistant football coach, was remembered fondly by his players, while Irimie was celebrated by her students for her patience and kindness. Both Mason and Christian were described by their families and friends as kind-hearted and full of life.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), the FBI, and other agencies quickly converged on the Gray home to search for evidence that might shed light on Colt’s motive. “We’re still piecing together a lot of the timeline and events leading up to the shooting”, said GBI Director Chris Hosey during a press conference.
Meanwhile, Colt’s father, Colin Gray, has been arrested and faces multiple charges, including second-degree murder. Authorities allege that his negligence and failure to secure the firearm directly contributed to the tragedy. The investigation continues as officials gather more information about Colt’s background, mental health struggles, and the events leading up to the shooting.
A Cry for Help Ignored
Family members and neighbors say Colt had been struggling with severe mental health issues and had been “begging for help” for months leading up to the massacre. His aunt, Annie Brown, told The Washington Post, “The adults around him failed him”.
Colt’s troubled history was known to authorities, but earlier warnings were not enough to prevent the tragedy. Despite a previous investigation by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI into threats made by Colt on Discord, no action was taken at the time. The case was closed after authorities could not substantiate the claims.
A Community in Mourning
In the wake of the shooting, the community of Winder gathered for a vigil to honor the victims and seek comfort in the face of unthinkable loss. Barrow County schools were closed for the rest of the week as students, teachers, and parents grappled with the trauma.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp called the incident “everybody’s worst nightmare”, highlighting the alarming rise in school shootings across the United States. With at least 385 mass shootings recorded in 2024 alone, the incident at Apalachee High School serves as another grim reminder of the need for comprehensive solutions to prevent gun violence and protect vulnerable children.
Moving Forward
Colt Gray will remain in custody at the Gainesville Regional Youth Detention Center, where he will be tried as an adult. His first court appearance is scheduled for September 6. As the community seeks answers and healing, the focus remains on supporting the victims and preventing future tragedies.
