Gaza City — A recent Israeli airstrike on a designated humanitarian zone in southern Gaza has resulted in the deaths of at least 40 people and injuries to 60 others, according to local Palestinian officials. The strike targeted Al-Mawasi, a tent encampment in Khan Younis, which has become a refuge for thousands of displaced Palestinians amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
The Incident
The strike occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, catching many residents in their sleep. Israeli forces stated that the operation aimed at a Hamas command and control center within the encampment. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed that senior Hamas operatives, who were "directly involved" in the October 7 assault on Israel and planning further attacks, were embedded in the area. However, Hamas has denied these allegations, calling them a "blatant lie" intended to justify what it termed "heinous crimes" against civilians.
According to witnesses and rescue officials, the strike left three large craters and destroyed around 20 to 40 tents. Mahmoud Bassal, a spokesperson for Gaza Civil Defense, reported that entire families were buried under sand and debris, with rescue teams struggling to retrieve victims due to a lack of resources and poor lighting.
Eyewitness Accounts and Immediate Aftermath
Rami al-Shareef, a displaced resident from Gaza City, described the chaos that unfolded. "I was lying inside the tent trying to sleep when suddenly there was a loud sound of bombing", he said. "We didn't know what happened, but everyone was in a panic. We went out to see three deep craters nearby".
The camp, located near Khan Younis, has been deemed a humanitarian safe zone by Israel. However, Tuesday's strike marked one of the deadliest incidents since the conflict escalated, leaving residents and international observers questioning the safety of such zones. In July, a similar Israeli strike in the same area killed at least 90 people, with Israel claiming it was targeting Hamas military commander Mohammed Deif.
International Reactions and Calls for Investigation
The incident has drawn international condemnation, with many questioning Israel's military tactics in densely populated areas. The United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees reported that a convoy for a polio vaccination campaign in Gaza was temporarily stopped by the Israeli military, causing damage to U.N. armored vehicles. The U.S. State Department has urged Israel to conduct a "swift, thorough, and transparent investigation" into the incident, particularly regarding the death of Aysenur Eygi, a Turkish American activist recently killed in the West Bank.

The Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza
Gaza remains in a state of humanitarian crisis, with over 40,900 Palestinians reported killed and nearly 95,000 injured since the conflict began, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. The conflict has displaced around 90% of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents, many of whom have been forced to relocate multiple times due to Israeli evacuation orders and continued hostilities.
The Al-Mawasi strike has intensified the humanitarian emergency, as aid groups struggle to provide basic services in the crowded camps. Despite designating Al-Mawasi as a humanitarian zone, Israel has continued to conduct operations in the area, targeting what it describes as Hamas militants.
Military Justifications and Civilian Concerns
Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, an Israeli military spokesperson, disputed the reported number of casualties, stating that the figures "do not line up with the information available to the Israeli army". He reiterated that the strike was a precise operation aimed at neutralizing Hamas fighters embedded in the humanitarian zone.

Israel maintains that it takes precautions to avoid civilian casualties and holds Hamas responsible for civilian deaths by positioning military assets within populated areas. Hamas, in turn, denies using civilian areas for military purposes, accusing Israel of committing war crimes against unarmed civilians.

Ongoing Hostilities and Uncertain Future
The war, triggered by Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7, continues to escalate with no signs of a ceasefire. Efforts by the United States, Egypt, and Qatar to broker peace have stalled amid mutual accusations of bad faith from both sides. The conflict has led to immense suffering, with fears growing that Gaza may face a severe famine due to the breakdown of its healthcare system and restrictions on humanitarian aid.
As the conflict enters a new phase of intensity, the international community remains divided over the legality and morality of the actions taken by both Israel and Hamas. With thousands of lives lost and millions displaced, the search for a sustainable resolution seems more urgent than ever. As the dust settles in Al-Mawasi, the world watches closely, hoping for an end to the cycle of violence that has plagued the region for decades.
