Supreme Court Criticizes Andhra Pradesh CM Naidu Over Allegations on Adulterated Ghee in Tirupati Temple Prasadam

The Supreme Court of India, on September 30, sharply criticized Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu for publicly alleging the use of adulterated ghee, including animal fat, in the preparation of laddus at the revered Tirumala Tirupati Temple. The court questioned the necessity and propriety of making such a statement when the matter was still under investigation, expressing concerns over the impact on millions of devotees.

"We expect the Gods to be kept away from politics": Supreme Court criticizes Andhra CM N Chandrababu over adulterated ghee claims in Tirupati laddus.

Court's Observations on the Case

During the hearing, a bench led by Justices BR Gavai and KV Viswanathan remarked that lab reports indicated that the ghee sample in question might have been from a rejected batch. The court expressed skepticism about whether this ghee had even been used to make the laddus offered as prasadam at the temple. The Justices also expressed concerns about the involvement of political figures in religious matters, with Justice Gavai emphasizing,

“We expect the Gods to be kept away from politics”.

The court further questioned the State's decision to go public with these allegations, particularly when an investigation was already underway. Justice Viswanathan noted, "When you have ordered an investigation through the SIT, what was the necessity to go to the press?"

Ongoing Investigation & Next Steps

The controversy arose following statements made by CM Naidu, claiming that animal fat was used in the production of Tirupati laddus during the previous regime. The court, however, pointed out that such statements lacked substantial evidence and could adversely affect the sentiments of millions of devotees worldwide.

The Supreme Court directed Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to seek instructions from the Central Government regarding whether an independent investigation is necessary. The matter has been scheduled for further hearing on October 3.

Allegations & Rebuttals

The case also involves multiple petitions, including one filed by BJP leader Dr. Subramanian Swamy. Senior Advocate Rajashekhar Rao, representing Swamy, argued that CM Naidu's public statement was irresponsible and contradicted by the Executive Officer of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), who stated that such adulterated ghee was never used.

Swamy’s petition seeks a court-monitored investigation, as he contends that the CM’s statements, lacking verified evidence, could have far-reaching effects and disturb social harmony. “When such statements are made by persons holding responsible posts without adequate material, they have far-reaching ramifications,” Rao remarked during the hearing.

The Legal Battle & Devotee Sentiments

Senior Advocate Siddharth Luthra, representing TTD, confirmed that complaints had been raised about the quality of the laddus. He stated that the ghee samples tested by the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) were found to be adulterated, but there was no proof that this ghee was used in making the laddus.

Luthra argued that the contaminated ghee was supplied between June and July 2024, but the batches used for prasadam were from different tankers. The Justices questioned why second opinions weren’t sought, considering the religious significance of the laddus.

Political & Religious Sensitivities

The court noted that the Chief Minister’s statement, made on September 18, was premature, considering that an FIR was filed only on September 25 and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed later. The timing and nature of the public statement have raised questions about political motives, with Justice Viswanathan observing,

At least the Gods should be kept away from politics”.

Despite the serious allegations, the court remains unconvinced by the evidence presented so far, urging caution in such sensitive religious matters. Several high-profile petitions from political figures and spiritual leaders have been filed, all seeking clarity and accountability in the administration of Hindu religious institutions, especially concerning the preparation of prasadam at temples.

Conclusion: Awaiting Further Developments

The Supreme Court’s interim observations highlight the need for a thorough and unbiased investigation into the matter. With millions of devotees' faith at stake, the court’s decision on whether to allow the SIT to continue or to transfer the investigation to an independent agency could significantly influence public sentiment and political discourse in Andhra Pradesh.

As the case progresses, all eyes are on the next hearing, scheduled for October 3, when the court will further examine the evidence and determine the course of action. The controversy has not only shaken the faith of millions but also raised pertinent questions about the role of politics in religious affairs.
