Mohammed Siraj Takes Charge as DSP of Telengana: Honored for Cricket Achievements

Indian pacer & fast-bowler Mohammed Siraj officially took on the role of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in Telangana on Friday, October 11, 2024. Reporting to the Director General of Police (DGP), Telangana, Siraj has now added a new chapter to his remarkable career, being recognized not only for his cricketing achievements but also as a public servant. This prestigious position was credited him by the Telangana government following India's historic win in the ICC T-20 World Cup 2024.

Indian cricketer Siraj appointed as DSP in Telangana after World Cup win. Honored 600-square-yard plot alongside Nikhat Zareen before New Zealand test

Recognition from Telangana Government

The recognition of Siraj’s contribution to Indian cricket came earlier in July when Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy directed state officials to award Siraj a government job and allot a plot of land as a gesture of appreciation for his role in India’s World Cup victory. On October 11, 2024, this promise was fulfilled as Siraj took charge as DSP, continuing to inspire millions both on and off the field.

Siraj, along with boxer Nikhat Zareen, a two-time world champion, was awarded a prestigious Group-1 post. The Telangana government amended the Telangana (Regulation of Appointments to Public Services and Rationalisation of Staff Pattern and Pay Structure) Act, 1994, to facilitate these appointments, reflecting the state’s commitment to honoring its sports icons.

Land Allotment & Continued Cricketing Career

The state cabinet in early August also allotted Siraj a 600-square-yard plot of land at Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad, further cementing the state’s recognition of his contribution to Indian cricket. Despite his new responsibilities as DSP, Siraj remains committed to his cricketing career. He will be back in action later this month when India faces New Zealand in a three-match Test series starting on October 16 at Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium.

A Career of Excellence

Siraj, who made his Test debut for India in 2020 during their tour of Australia, has since become a permanent fixture in the national team. His stellar performance in the final Test of the series in Brisbane, where he took a five-wicket haul, remains one of his most celebrated achievements. Earlier this year, Siraj helped India win the Asia Cup, delivering a remarkable six-wicket haul in the final against Sri Lanka.

His recent performances in the home series against Bangladesh further showcased his consistency, where he claimed four wickets across two Test matches. Although Siraj has been rested for the ongoing T20I series against Bangladesh, he remains a key player for India in all three formats of the game.

Inspiration Beyond Cricket

Siraj’s appointment as DSP is not just a reward for his cricketing prowess but also a testament to his inspiring journey. Born and raised in Hyderabad, Siraj’s rise from humble beginnings to becoming one of India’s leading fast bowlers has made him a role model for young athletes. His new role as DSP adds to this legacy, serving as an inspiration for young Indians to strive for excellence both in sports and public service.

Telangana Police took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to announce the news, writing, "Indian cricketer Mohammed Siraj has been appointed as Telangana's DSP, honoring his cricket achievements and dedication to the state. He will continue his cricket career while inspiring many with his new role."
